About schutt's Apple Mill and Country Store
By Richard Batzing, Webster Historian

In 1916, Paul Schutt was taking his apples to a local cider mill to be processed for cider. He not only had to pay for this service but he was only able to take home one barrel of cider from his own apples since the owner of the mill kept the 10-12 extra gallons for himself. Paul told his father Charles that some day he was going to start his own cider mill. Paul persuaded his brother, Carl, to be his partner and together they opened Schutt's Cider Mill in 1918.

There was no electricity so all of the power used to operate the grinders and presses was generated either by hand or from horse power. It was several years before tractor power was used to operate the machinery within the mill. Their father, Charles, died in 1917 so he never saw the cider mill become a reality. Carl died in 1958 and Verne Schutt, another brother, became Paul's partner until Paul's son, Charles, bought Vern's share of the mill in the early 1960's. Arlene Schutt Wakerow, Paul's daughter loves to tell about the history.

Charles Schutt soon began to expand the cider mill into a real country store and with the help of his wife, Theresa Willmes Schutt, has introduced all sorts of dried fruits and vegetables, even dried apples, the best of New York State cheeses and real homemade baked goods. Fresh fried cakes are made on the premises.

Schutt's continues to add new products and produce. A good portion of their sales comes from the sale of fresh apples year round. You can also buy potatoes, squash or onions by the bushel and all sizes and shapes of baskets reminiscent of those made in the old Webster Basket Factory. In 1985, Charles began his retirement and turned the operation of the Apple Mill and Country Store over to his son, Marty.

From a cider mill eighty years ago, Schutt's has grown to a large country store. The mill now custom wraps and ships apples anywhere in the continental United States.
